Molten bronze - Jay and Maria Lloyd

Things go on in the workshop next door to my hubby's workshop, Alchemy. I have always loved the transformation of liquids and solids and people control and wisdom of playing and creating new things and new forms from one essence into another. It really is quite remarkable the skill set that is involved when playing with molten metals. Jay tells me that he can hear the sound of the flame change when it is ready, at just the right temperature to be poured into holds. A few seconds to late and it is too hot, not hot enough you will be starting all over again.

This highly tuned senses has been fine tuned over the twenty or so years of casting, it is almost by accident that your ears and eyes develop to give you these strong signs that it is the right time for perfection, right now! It is not something learned but rather something experienced again and again, until it is imbedded into the mind as extra sensitive perception. Extra ordinary it definitely is, as I stood there listening and finding it hard to hear the change, was that it or just my imagination? I will not know unless I stand next to Jay another two hundred or so times if I can pick it up.

I have not had the experience that he has but I know myself how much it comes down to detail when you become an expert at your trade. I make the smallest adjustments to my images that for me are noticeable but to others who don't work in the digital Lightroom are unneccary or unnoticeable. My partner he works down to the millimetre in his craft, making the smallest adjustments to make the perfect joins and measurements in his bespoke cabinet work. He gets the satisfaction that his work is perfect.

Maria is there too, she is like a hardworking bee, always ready and so used to the routine that it is like watching water moving around each other as the two of them work as one. He pours, she collects, She bakes the moulds, he shapes them. No communication is needed as it is a well oiled partnership which has stood the weathers of time. Working in a workshop which is big enough but has been filled on every surface and corner with creations, so the footprint that is left like a river around the middle needs to be mastered and it is well trodden. These two work hard, very hard and their creations are nothing short of hard graft, vision and their souls.
